Summer's over for me....Boo Hoo...

So now that summer is over I feel like I can start my old routine again.  The kiddo goes to school and I get about an hour of writing in before I go to work, etc. During the summer I slept in until I had to go to work. Only writing I did was after work on most days.  My days off the kiddo was home, so I was easily distracted.

This summer we went to the condo for about 4 days or so, and no it is never long enough.  I keep trying to get the hubby to take more than two days off of work, but it never seems to happen.  The beach was great though and I can't wait to go back.

Another great summer moment was when Liz Pelletier (Entangled Publishing) came down for the weekend to teach a day long class. I love, Liz. She's pretty awesome. She also invited me to write a short story for a submission call they are putting out soon. I wrote it in 4 days. LOL  Maybe submission requests are they way to go for me.

Then I went to Atlanta in July to RWA National. There were about 9 Sola-RWA chapter mates there, and we all got together for lunch one day and breakfast another day.

I attended several classes, but I missed many of them too.  Seems self-publishing was the biggie this year, and that's great, but I'm still working on my craft. I took lots of craft classes. I'm still learning my voice right now, which I'm thinking is pretty simple. No flowery prose at all.  I say what I gotta' say and get out. Sometimes its more telling, though I do work hard to show when needed.

While at RWA I decided I know what I want when I grow up.  I want my book covers on elevator doors. Those elevator covers were just too cool! And Sylvia Day had drink coasters in the bar with her books and name on them. Whoa. Now that was a great idea. Mostly everyone hung out at the bar.

I got to chat with Barbara Vey, Jade Lee, Laura Bradford, Pamela Clare, (and her cute audio guy, Kaleo.), Sabrina Jeffries, and we even sat next to Nora Roberts once. Yes. I was an amazing time. And for the Rita/Golden Heart awards my buddy Devon Alexander and I got to sit with some amazing talented people.

So where is my name you ask....Well, we sort of just sat down, and then realized we were crashing Table #64. We leaned over and asked two ladies who happened to be The Librarian and Bookseller of the year, Cathy and Sarah if someone was sitting there, and they said nope. LOL They said Devon and I where there guest. Sweet, huh. Congrats to these wonderful ladies...They rock!

So what did I learn from the conference? The number one thing was to write the next book.  Series sell better on Amazon. Readers still love paperbacks as much as e-readers.

So what did I do all summer on the writing front? Well I wrote a short novella in less than a week as I mentioned above. And I'm working on another short contemporary set in a small Louisiana town set in the Bayou. I'm still playing around with my witch novel, but it's been the hardest book to write.  Maybe because I re-wrote it 3x's and it's telling me enough.(Never)  I also got a new critique partner. And I hope she'll push me to do my best. She's already doing really awesome, but she has lots more on the way. I'll do my best to help her as best I can too. :-)

I hope you had a great summer. I would love to hear what you did or still doing.

Hugs,
Dawn Chartier

On My Mind by, Sara Megibow (Agent) ~ from Newsletter Article

(This is an article from Nelson Agency - Permission was granted to me to repost by Sara Megibow)

On My Mind by Sara Megibow
My son is seven years old, and he’s short. I’m short, my husband is short. No big surprise there, right? Last month the kid and I were in line for ski passes. For those of you who don’t ski, please know that ski passes are not cheap. They range from $80 to $150 per day per skier. But we like to ski, so we budget for it. At the cash register, the total was much lower than I expected so I said, “That’s two regular-priced tickets, please, not one.” Cashier said, “Oh, I thought your son was five. He would have been free at five.” The woman in line behind me said (loudly), “Why on earth did you say anything? You should have taken the free ticket.” And all I could think to say was, “Because I don’t want to teach my son that honesty is only for rich people.” So, I paid full price, and my son was there to learn the lesson.Honesty.
When an author has a book for sale, one of our goals is to sell that book for money. Most authors will make a little money, some will make more money, and a verrrrrry few will make a lot of money. Regardless, in publishing, one goal is to bring in money. (Another goal is high artistic integrity, but more on that in another post.)
When readers pirate books for free, they are not paying the authors for those works. Those authors earn nothing for all their hard work. Now, I get that it's tempting to get a free book. And I also know that an author is popular if he/she is being regularly pirated. Pirated books can and probably do spread the word to legitimate book buyers. But that should not be the rationale.
Don’t take music files without paying for them. Don’t post pictures on your website that you don’t own. Don’t sneak into a movie without paying for it. Don’t lie to get cheaper ski passes. Be honest.
Sincerely,
Sara
What's Hot by Sara Megibow
I spent a week in NYC this month. Mostly I was enjoying New York ComicCon and geeking out with 119,000 other comic-book fans. But I did manage to do some work between getting autographs and being a fan girl. What’s hot in the world of adult science fiction and fantasy right now?
Based on meetings I had at ComicCon:
  • The mash-up! Science fiction with steampunk, fantasy set in an historical time period with vampires, space opera with magic wands and prophecies. This is one reason Michael Martinez is getting such amazing advance publicity for THE DAEDALUS INCIDENT, his debut science fiction mash-up scheduled for early 2013.
  • Commercial, fun, high-action science fiction. Think spaceships, aliens, battles, cool gadgets--the works.
  • Epic fantasy with a unique story. A story bigger than “adventurers on an epic journey to find the magic object that will save the world.” Betsy Dornbusch has an epic fantasy called EXILE (Feb 2013) set in a totally unique world. This is what’s hot.

Is the Election Driving You Crazy too?

I don't know about you, but this election is driving me insane.

I can't recall when I got so hung up over the media attacking this and that one, and I hate that it is pulling negative feelings out of me. I found myself caught up in moments where I made comments on other peoples posts, then I posts news articles, and then regretted my choice of words. This is not good. When this happens, it's time for me to take a step back, and put my focus elsewhere.

I'm normally pretty calm, collected, and not too verbal (most of the time), so I think what I'm going to do for right now is stay off of FB and Twitter for the next few weeks. I don't like getting this stressed over politics. I just want a better country like everyone else.

I'm almost done with my novella, Mixed Magic, so I'll bury myself in that until I"m done, and I'll see you after the election is over.

Now go vote!

p.s. Here is a picture I based my character, Rayne Morgeaux on, she is in the first witch book, but her story is actually the 2nd book, Bare Bones. (the picture is Kate Beckinsale with blonde hair.)

Happy reading everyone,
Dawn

The First Review for Diamonds is in! Woot!

I try not to pimp my novel too much because I know how it feels when other authors go overboard on me. (not that I mind, but I know some people do.)

So, I try to save my pimping on my firsts. And today is a first. My first review on DIAMONDS. I began to wonder if the book just sucked so bad because not a single soul had reviewed it. I did see people purchasing it, but just not talking about it...(I guess no talk it better than negative talk?)

Okay, enough about that. A kind reviewer named, Cheryl with Manic Readers Reviews posted this about DIAMONDS. (the review site is www.manicreaders.com)
Diamonds is part of the Stiletto Millionaire Club series. This is the first time I have read anything by author, Dawn Chartier. This book was a quick read. Not just because it is a short novel but because the characters and story were so good. Holly and Drake steamed up the pages of this book. If I wore eye glasses, then they would have been fogged up. The banter they had with each other was also good. I plan to check out more books in this series and by this author.

p.s. I got a 4.5 stars out of 5! Not bad if she plans to check out more books in this series, right?

Crap, I better hurry up and finish the next book.

The next in the series is Moe's story...the beginning of the story is a big heart breaker, but Moe wins in the end...I promise...

(Cheryl, if you read this, Thank you for your kind review!)

That's all the pimping for this week...(sorry, but I had to share my first review.)

Thanksgiving already? No!

I don't know about you, but I'm not ready for the holidays.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a scrooge are anything, but this year has flown by and all my goals weren't met. Bummer dude!

I did reach a few goals, such as I lost 20 pounds,(great to get back in my old jeans) and I sold another book, (Yay! Diamonds will be out in January 2012, with Siren BookStrand) but I still haven't completed my "Buried Magic" book, and you know what? That's okay with me.

Why is this book so much harder than the rest of them? Well, I think it's because I had an idea, and wrote the book based on that idea. It wasn't plotted out very well & the characters were so-so. Okay, it sucked!

I knew I had a good unique twist with my idea. I even had a couple of top notch agents request it and read it, but they saw through the holes, but at least they were kind enough to request the revised copy once it was done. (Thank you Kevan and Daniel)

Now...I'm on my third draft, and with the help of three wonderful crit buddies,(buddies who have wonderful talents) my characters are finally taking on a "real life" of their own. And I'm finally getting somewhere, and even though it's not done, and won't be done for 2011, I will have it finished in 2012. It will be the story editors and agents want. Buried Magic is my new goal for 2012. I will get er' done! lol

Now my next little goal is to make a Thanksgiving food list. This shouldn't be hard, right?

What about you? Have any goals you know you won't reach this year, but your willing to take it to next 2012 and not give up?

Yay! A book offer for DIAMONDS!

I already spread the wonderful news on FB and Twitter, but I haven't shared it here yet.

Anyway, I got an offer for DIAMONDS, a contemporary erotic romance story set in Destiny, Florida. DIAMONDS is the first novella in a 3 book series. The series is called, The Stiletto Millionaire Club.

What's that? Well, it's about 3 women (actually 4 best friends) who are very financially secure. (for now) But why would anyone want to read about rich women you ask? Because they have loads of problems just like everyone else. Problems that money can't fix, and they deserve to find out like the rest of us that money can't buy love. All these ladies want is true love, and a strong man who will stand up for them if needed. It doesn't matter if he's the guy cutting their grass or the UPS delivery guy, or a sexy masked thief. (hint hint) As long as his heart is in the right place, magic will happen. (not they paranormal kind of magic. The magic of love.) If you want paranormal magic, read NOT AN ANGEL.

DIAMONDS, is scheduled for release around Jan. 2012, but I have a feeling with the holidays, it might be closer to Feb. 2012, but who knows. Siren might be the publisher to get er' done quick.

I hope readers will enjoy DIAMONDS, Book #1 in The Stiletto Millionaire Club Series. I had soooo much fun writing it.

Thanks for stopping by,
Dawn

Self-publish update and Sola meeting recap....

The sales are doing better than I expected, so that's a good thing. But the only thing I hadn't thought about was promo. How would I get the word out that I self-published a book that had been previously published with another publisher?

Well, I spoke to a few friends and they are willing to give me a hand and put me on their blogs and such. A few friends are doing shout out's for me too. I love my buddies! Thank you!

Now, lets talk about Sola. The meeting today was pretty interesting. We had a panel of speakers talk about the things they got out of RWA National. The highlights, their favorite class or workshop, or panel, and a lot of other things. The main thing I wanted to know was was it worth the money? Especially in NY. They all said yes. So, there you go. If you are thinking about going next year, our panel said it was worth it. Next year I think it's in California. I'm not sure if I'm going to go or not yet, but I am attending the first FFandP Conference (Fantasy, Futuristic and Paranormal) in March 2012 in New Orleans!

The FFandP conference will be amazing. Karen M. Moning will be there and also, Diana Rowland and many many many more authors. And this trip will be much cheaper than RWA. They will have editors and agents as well! It's going to be great!

That's about all. Oh, I'll be adding several blogs were I'll be dropping by, and I hope you'll come and say hello. I'll be giving away a free copy of NOT AN ANGEL on each blog.

Or if you'd rather purchase it, that's cool too. It's available at Amazon Kindle for only $2.99

Hugs,
Dawn

So how's that self-pubbing going you ask...hmm...

Well, NOT AN ANGEL just went live and I'm happy to say it's going much better than I expected. I sold about a dozen books (within a little over 24 hrs.), and I think that is pretty darn good numbers. The only problem is, I'm addicted to checking those numbers all day long. lol I gotta stop the madness!

If you buy NOT AN ANGEL,(available at amazon.com/kindlebooks) please feel free to contact me. I love hearing from readers, so give me a shout out. dawn@dawnchartier.com

Now off to write the next Poryria book.

New Cover ~ Not An Angel

Just wanted to share my new cover for Not An Angel. Why is there a new cover you ask? And what happened to the other one?

Well, I couldn't use the same one the publisher had used, and because I got the rights back, I needed a new design for when I self-publish. I'm so excited leaping into the self-publishing world with Trace & Kira's story. I see this as an adventure. And I'm curious to know what you think of the new Trace too.

I'm hoping to have Not An Angel uploaded to Amazon & B&N before the end of the month.

Dear Readers,

If you were wondering what happened to my book, Not An Angel, I requested my rights back due to the contract coming up for renewal. I plan to put the book back on Amazon & other e-book stores (at a *cheaper* price) as soon as I can, but first I need to make a few changes & add a new cover.

Check back in a week or so. ;-)

Thanks,
Dawn Chartier
