Writing: Still learning and learning and learning....

I didn't want everyone to think I've disappeared. I haven't.
I'm still writing, yet I'm not shopping for a agent/editor anymore at this time.

I'm trying to learn my craft better, and when I feel I'm at that point, I'll look for a publishing home...

I'll be taking more classes, going to conferences, critiqing, reading and writing...(I've learned that you have to submit the best, and I'm still to new at this for it to be my best)

Anyone out there with writing advice, I'll be glad to listen up......You'll see me out there on the bookshelves one day, just not yet. -- Keep your eyes opened.......

Hugs,
Dawn

Home Sweet Home NOLA

Gustav came and left. Some areas hit harder than others.
My home survived. I believe Houma and Baton Rouge areas got hit the hardest this time.
I have friends and family in both areas and they say this was the worst they've ever seen.

Our worries were the levees on the Westbank, but good news, they held tight. A few leaks, but the Corps are working on them to get them good as new.

We lost some trees, and the yard and pool is a mess, but overall we are safe and sound.

I dreaded evacuating, having to miss Heather Graham's writers conference, but I heard the hotel kicked them out Saturday morning. All those authors and editors had to leave. Sorry guys, but that's how it goes in New Orleans. Better to get out than to stay where it's not safe.

Kathy sorry I missed your Divorce party, next year lady...I'll be there come rain or shine....
Erin, missed seeing you, Kathleen, Kate, Adam, and the Sola group.....I'm thinking about squeezing in another conference, maybe we will catch up then........

Hugs,

Hurricane Gustav

Well, its that time of the year again. "Hurricane time" and we all know what that means.
Filling up the vehicles with gas, shopping for supplies, and getting a plan in gear.

We haven't had to evacuate since Katrina, and what a nightmare that was just trying to get out of town (14 hr. drive to Houston, normally 4 hours). If Gustav comes our way we will more than likely leave again. I live on the Westbank side of the Mississippi River and that is worse than being in New Orleans (well some parts). We are surrounded by water on most sides. Our levees on the Westbank are not complete. Still under construction, thats the worst part. My house sits a few hundred feet from those levees. So if you are wondering if I'm nervous, well of course I am.

I have kids, and they are always your main concern. You want them safe and not have to go through this again.

If you want to keep updated in New Orleans and the storm you can go to several places for our local news.
www.wwltv.com and then there is another station where a news guy blogs. Go to bobbreck.blogspot.com

Someone asked me on a loop of all my books which ones do I take with me....
Well, I'm not really allowed to take too many because we need room for the kids (grin), but I'd have to say off the top of my head. Sherrilyn Kenyon, JR Ward, Karen Moning, Farrah Rochon, Stephenie Meyer, Christine Feehan, JD Robb, Kathy Love, Erin McCarthy, Heather Graham, Laura J Rowland,.....darn it...as you can see I can't decide........I love them all....I might just have to buy all new books...

Good luck to all those on the Gulf Coast.....I wish you well........ I'll try and blog from where ever I am once I get settled. (if I have to leave)........

p.s. Heather Graham's writers conference is this weekend in New Orleans. I hope I still get to go and have fun with all the wonderful writers, authors & editors coming in town...I've been both of them before this and they were a blast.....

Starting the next Voodoo book

Wow. I can't believe I'm already starting the 2nd book in this series.
I've got a lot to flesh out though with my hero. He's going to have some serious issues.
His beliefs are just way out of wack. Time to throw in my heroine and get him into trouble.

Never had trouble with a title before, this one I am.

Cruise Picture

My buddies asked why I didn't post a cruise pictures on my blog. (Didn't realize they read it).

Anywho, this is the group I went with, bunch of yahoo's. (grin) I believe we were missing two who already went aboard the ship. (30 grand total) You can barely see me. I'm sort of way in the back with a brown shirt. My hair was straight for this pic. which is normally pretty curly. We had a blast, though I won't do cruises no more. I'd rather fly, saves time....

RWA Nationals

Last year I attended the RWA Nationals for the first time, and boy was I surprised.
I had no clue what to expect, I stayed with 3 people I had no idea who they were, even though we were all on-line writing buddies. My hubby thought I'd gone off the deep end.

He says, "You who are afraid to go anywhere by yourself flies to Houston to stay with three strangers." He shakes his head....

How could I make him or my family and friends understand. Once you make a writing buddy on-line, you get to know them really well. Besides, they are writers, they can't be bad, right?

One of my WB's picked me up at the airport with her hubby and 2 little girls. For all they knew I was a axe murderer. But, us writers have a good judge of character. So, I sat next to the baby girl in the back of the van, and what a sweet little doll she was. Talking baby talk up a storm to this stranger. (me). Sweet!

WB's hubby drops us off, and we go inside the Hilton and there are tons of people everywhere. My mouth hung open. "Holy Crap." I had no idea. Huge!

We then find our other WB partner and she's so excited, we all hug, find our room and then we stalk famous authors, agents and editors. (no, we didn't, not at first.)

We mostly hung out at the bar, then we had people join us. I saw some other writers I met at other conferences, and hung out with them too. I ended up having a great time.

I didn't have any appointments last year, I wasn't ready, but I did go and tell a few editors hello that I met. And yep, they remembered me by name. Shock Shock.... Made me feel less nervous...

So those that are wanting to go but are scared to because they are not the out going type. Just do it. I did, and I have to say I had the best time. Don't focus too much on your pitch if you have one. Just enjoy the information you'll absorb, the great people you'll meet, and just an opportunity to mingle with people that love the same things you do. "Reading and Writing"....and if your pitch happens to be great, thats a plus. Remember everyone has different taste, just like we do.

Oh, and don't forget to bring a camera. You'll get some great pics. of your favorite authors.

I'm sad I'm not going this year, but I had another writers thingy that cost a ton this year and I chose to do that instead. Which it turned out really well. I had a NY Editor request my work and 3 NY Agents as well. (no news yet)

I'll miss my WB's but they'll see me next year, maybe by then I'll have signed a deal.
And keep my bed empty, Dawn and Nikki!!! And nope, I don't want the blue smurf this time, I think Dawn M. wants to keep it.

A cruise to remember!

Just got back from a wonderful cruise on the Carnival Valor. Although, I wouldn't recommend 7 days on a ship to anyone. At least, that is not my idea of a great vacation. Next time I'm flying to an island, skip the boat scene....4 to 5 day cruise would have been plenty of sailing for me.....

I got plenty of writing idea's from this trip, and no it's not going to be about a cruise. It's more of an tropical island mystery thriller. I only say this because after our trip we heard our driver happened to sort of be a sly fellow, I won't go into details, but let's say his day job was a cover-up. He didn't tell us this, but the locals did. Maybe they were joking to give us a thrill, but boy did idea's pop into my sunburned head...

Then we ended up on a nude beach, stunned. We had no clue. You can imagine our surprise. We ended up snokeling in St. Thomas and St. Maarten, what beautiful beaches they have....Wow!!! We also visited Atlantis in Nassau. Gorgeous!

Now its time to get back into the writing, and stop crying about how tired I am and how much weight I gained on the trip...(did someone say diet?)

Okay, anyone in the New Orleans area want to attend a SOLA writers meeting please do. 2 meetings are free...and in August we have a great author speaker, "Diana Rowland".

New Week of Revision Hell

Yesterday I started my second week of Revision Hell.
I only took one day off last week, only because I revised 40 pages on Sunday.
I can't remember who many pages I had last week but I want to say it was near 150 pages.

Yesterday I revised 27 pages, and I'm up to Chapter 13. Not bad if I can say so myself. I'm hoping this puppy will be done at least by Sunday...... Then I'll send out my submissions as requested......(I already sent one, only because I know they will take a little while, shh..don't tell you are not supposed to do that, but no worries, I'll be ready!)

One more little note, Saturday I was appointed Co-Director of Sola RWA. (I'm just filling till the end of the year.) --- Now I best get busy........

Have a great week.

Revision Hell

I joined a group of writer buddies and we are doing Candace Havens Fast Draft/Revision Hell.
Today was our first official count (this go round) and I revised 26 pages total. My goal was 20, so I'm happy with that.

You don't realize what you can do when you set a goal and other people keep you accountable for your pages. I know I want to do good, but having those other writers keeping track of your new or revised pages really pushes you that extra mile.

Tomorrow, lets see if I can beat my 26 pages from today. Hope my other writing buddies had a great day too.

Have a great day!

Lawmakers rushing through a 200% pay increase!

(This blog is not for my writers life blog, this is more of a personal upset by politics blog, so please excuse the ranting. sorry)

Our lawmakers are pushing a 200 % pay raise for themselves. We did not get to vote on this. Not only that, their raise will be linked to congressional pay. If congress gets a pay raise, so do the lawmakers. (I'm shaking my head in shame over this sneaky trick these lawmakers are doing to the citizen's of Louisiana, shame on you! We will be watching the final vote.)

I voted for Bobby Jindal Gov., who I think is a very smart man, at least so far he has been. But, then I hear he has turned his cheek to this Senate Bill 672. Not good, Gov. Jindal, not good at all. Don't allow them to bully you. Do a great job for us, and stay true to yourself.

Do what is right.

So if you are in Louisiana and you want your voice to be heard email Gov. Jindal or your State Rep. Go to the website: http://www.gov.louisiana.gov/
or call 866-366-1121.

Us Louisiana people don't like being made a fool of. We will remember who voted to pass this and who voted against it.

Pen to Press Writers Retreat

After a week at the Pen to Press writers retreat, I must say I was sad it ended.
I learned so much information from authors Sarah Langan and Hank Schewable (sp?) Sorry if I messed up Hank's last name. Other wonderful authors there were Scott Nicholson, Cherry Adair, Natalie Collins, Alex Sokoloff, Debra LeBlanc. All there to help other writers along the publishing way....

Anyway, the entire experience of the retreat was so helpful. I learned how to write a better query and synopsis. I also learned how to hook the reader with a meaningful first sentence. Not some spiced up hook, a real true meaning to the book "hook".

I did well pitching to agents and editors that attended. I was so happy when I heard they were interested in my story. But, at the same time, I'm thinking to myself, oh boy....
Now I learned some new tricks to writing, I need to fix a few things in my story and get it out to them soon... Cross your fingers or toes or whatever you can.......

So writers if you want a great writers bootcamp, Pen To Press is very small, which is what I liked, and they work with your story. I recommend it highly.

China's Earthquake

It's hard to write about this, but I feel I must.

My heart is bleeding for the quake victims in China.

It's a sad, sad day in China where most of the bodies were those of little children in school.

The parents sent their children to schools not realizing the buildings were not built properly to withstand an earthquake. What the hell is wrong with their government that this was allowed. What kind of contractor would build a school knowing that could happen?
How can he and the government sleep at night? This sortof gives me Daja vue all over again.

But one cannot compare the grief that these families are feeling when most of them only had one child, and now they don't.

And most importantly, the schools should have been the first resue effort. Many people are reporting that they weren't.

My prayers are with you China!

Moonlight --- CBS Do Not Cancel Please!!!

I'm not sure if it is true or not, but I heard that Moonlight could be cancelled tomorrow??
Please oh please tell me this is not true. I only watch a couple of shows and this show
happens to be one of them. ~ So CBS, if you are reading blogs (which I doubt), but in case,
do not cancel Moonlight. ~~~ You have no idea (or maybe you do) how many fans will be pissed off at you. I'll stop watching "all" of your shows if you do this! Really!

Ok, I vented. Now you can tell Mick St. John (character) to come and visit me anytime he's hungry. I live in the perfect vampire town "New Orleans", you'll fit right in...

Just chatting

I had to take a break at work, so here I am.
I'm really getting excited by going to Pen to Press Writers Conference at the end of this month.
I think it will really help (at least I hope it will) with my writing skills.
The classes will be tought by authors, and then we will get the chance to pitch our stories to a few agents/editors at the end of the conference.

Well, if I have a lot to learn from this conference and many changes from that, I'm not sure I'd like to pitch a story that needs work, if that makes any since at all??

I also wanted to ask writers out there is there a certain place you seem to get most of your ideas from. Say example: After I drop my daughter off at school and I'm driving to work, I turn on this side street I think it's called Central Ave. I always seem to get book ideas........then I forget them...so this morning, I grabbed a pen and paper and jotted down one of the ideas...Does this happen to you?? I wonder why on Central Ave I get things that pop into my head?? Strange, huh.

On another note: Things I've read lately - Eclipse by Stephanie Meyer - Loved the book, but not liking where the ending led to...guess we have to wait for book #4 - Autumn Dawn...(p.s. This is a YA book along with the others in this series, first book was Twilight, it is a very clean book with all kinds of paranormal, it's great)

Till next time, good luck writing and reading....

Wow, it's been awhile since I blogged.
Well, I just wanted to share with my buddies that I received a request from a agent on my sci-fi story GENUS.

Funny thing was I got the request on a monday, and then on tuesday I had to have surgery. (I'm okay, it was just girl stuff) Yep! That was fun. But, I got it out to them today, I think they said it takes maybe up to 2 months. Ok, not so bad. Now, I've got to get back to polishing up my voodoo story...It's calling me....and so is about 10 other stories....shhhh... quiet!!!

Wish me luck.

Jubilee Jambalaya Writers Conference - Houma, LA

Jubilee Jambalaya Writers Conference is a small conference, but one that is enjoyable. It is a good way to learn a few things on writing, publishing, marketing, etc. Check it out http://www.terrebonne.lib.la.us/writers ((now I don't work for them, I'm just spreading the news to newbie writers looking for a place to learn the trade.))

This year a few favorite authors will be there: Heather Graham, Erin McCarthy, Deborah LeBlanc, Kathy Love, Roxanne Becnel, Farrah Rochon, Laura Joh Rowland, F. Paul Wilson and many more talented authors. Many from the regional area too.

Now if you live near New Orleans there is also a RWA writers group which meets in Metairie every third Saturday. www.solawriters.org -- I've learned a great deal from these meetings.

I loved this fae novel....Moning knows her stuff, and she's created a world that is unbelievable. Her main character Mac (Mackayla) is tough as nails.......and you just don't know who the hero is. I'm hoping it's Barrons, but you never know....

Dream Chaser ------ Liked it a lot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I finished Dream Chaser this morning and I loved it.

Now, Sherrilyn I consider a friend, as do most her readers, but I had to email her today to say how much I enjoyed Dream Chaser. I don't normally do that, but sometimes a writer needs to hear they are doing it right. Especially when you see a bad review of it on amazon.com (she might not have seen it, but I did)...

Everyone has there opinions, but this one is off...
This book reminds me of her first books.
So, if you decided not to buy based on a bad review, do yourself a favor and give this one a shot. I did, and I'm glad.....

Thanks for the great story, and I can't wait to read Jaden's (he's getting a story right? I hope)

Cruise

I just returned from a cruise. (Key West and Cozumel) Had a great time, but I don't think cruising is for me.

I mean, not having to pack each time we landed on an island was truly nice, but being stuck on a boat, not my thing!

The best part about the cruise was swimming with the dolphins. The dolphin (Louie) put his nose on my foot and pushed me around on a boogie board, then I got to hold its fins (hands), and rode on top it's belly. Then it was sweet enough to give me kisses....How cool is that?? I loved it...

If ever you get the chance to swim with the dolphins, do it........

I did read some too.. Bloodfever by Moning. Loving it!!! I'm also reading Dream Chaser by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I'm also loving this one as well. It reminds me of her earlier books. Liking the ghost Jesse alot...

Anyway, I've got two books I need to review from new authors so I better get busy....

5th Annual Jubilee Jambalaya Writers Conference set for April 5th

I went to this writers conference last year, and had a great time.
This year should be even better. The keynote speaker is F. Paul Wilson, creator of the antihero Repairman Jack. There will be other authors there too, Heather Graham, Kathy Love, and Erin McCarthy, along with Editor Gary Goldstein of Kensington.

This is a small and more personal conference, that's what I enjoyed about it last year.
Plus there are the local authors coming such as: Laura Joh Rowland, June Shaw, Alice LeBlanc, and Farrah Rochon, and many more....

So, if you want to come on down to Houma, Louisiana for a conference, this would be the one.

Parade got rained out

Well, last Friday we got rained out for our parade.
But, we rode Wednesday instead, and the weather was so much better, thank god!

We had a great time. My arm is sore from throwing stuff, and my fingers are dried up from wet beads, but other than that I did good.

Tonight, I'm jumping back on the writing wagon since all the chaos is over with for me....Mardi Gras is not over, but for me it is......(at least I hope)

Books I'm reading right now are: Dark Succubi, Glory In Death, and one by CL Wilson, sorry forgot the name of the book but it is a excellent read, I'll post it later.

Well, my pup Samson is still hanging in there though I got up at 3am for some reason thinking he passed away, I found him on the den floor, he didn't move, I turned on the light, he still didn't move. I put my hand on his chest and he suddenly stretched out......scared me!!! I know he's slowly going, but I'm so not ready for him to leave...... I love him so much....he's my lil boy!

Okay, enough depressing stuff......... and back to my day job!

Mardi Gras is Here

Happy Mardi Gras yall!!!

(pic. on left - that's me standing looking at something??? and that's my daughter sitting) (pic. on right - that's me on the left (yes, I have a black wig on), then that's my daughter, and my best buddy Rhonda, with a wig on too. We are cleopatra's, our costumes for our parade..Don't I look funny with black hair..)

Well. I'm from New Orleans, and I don't truly like Mardi Gras. (Mardi Gras Day, that is)
I guess it's a "Been there-- Done that" kind of thing. When Mardi Gras comes, we usually go! (to another place that is)...

Now, I do ride in a parade every year, but it is a "small family" parade on the westbank. "Cleopatra". It's not the crazy "Mardi Gras Day" parades, where the insane come to play...

It's this Friday, so if any of my friends are going give me a call and I'll give you the scoop on the float # etc., I'll throw you bunches if I see you...

Now on the writing front. It's slow. After Friday's parade, I'm going to get my ass in gear! Seriously....

Have a safe and happy Mardi Gras!

Happy New Years

Being that today is January 1st 2008 (wow, I can't believe it, can you?), I wanted to blog about new beginnings. My new beginning this new year is to plant ass in the chair and just write.

I've been doing alot of brain storming but not putting it down in writing. What's a girl to do when she just has too many darn stories trying to pop out of her head at once. Well, I just decided I'm going to create a dairy or journal if you will logged with all my ideas. I'll put as much info as I have on it, and then move on to my current WIP.

I've had a week off to think about my voodoo story, and I'm still a little blocked on how to come about my ending. I think my characters are trying to screw with me. "NOT NICE"........

Anywho, I'm heading to write right now. Here's wishing everyone many book contracts...and a peaceful 2008....

Hugs all,
